Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday paid tribute to the former prime minister Indira Gandhi on her death anniversary.
“Tributes to former Prime Minister of India, Mrs. Indira Gandhi on her death anniversary,” the prime minister said in a statement.
Addressing a gathering to mark the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Mr. Modi also remembered the former Prime Minister, saying she sacrificed her life on this day and it could not be forgotten.
She was the daughter of the first prime minister of the country, late Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, and was born on November 19, 1917.
Indira Gandhi was assassinated on October 31, 1984, by her bodyguards a few months after she ordered the storming of the Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar to counter the Punjab insurgency.
She held the highest office as the prime minister of India from January 1966 to March 1977. She again chaired the prime minister’s office from January 14, 1980 till her death.
