PM Modi faces growing unrest in election year, Kejriwal extends support to protesting TDP MPs

Amidst several Dalit BJP MPs raising their voices of discontent against their own BJP-led central government, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday faced protests outside his official residence in Delhi by TDP MPs.

TDP MPs staged a protest outside Modi’s house demanding a special status for Andhra Pradesh, a demand for which the party recently snapped ties with the BJP. The TDP MPs were detained by the Delhi Police and taken to Tughlak Road Police Station.

“The Prime Minister is the person to take decisions on SCS. He has to fulfill his promises and that is why we want to raise our demands with him,” TDP MP Jaydev Galla was quoted as saying.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal too arrived at the police station to extend his support to the TDP parliamentarians. He tweeted, “TDP MPs taken to Tughlak Road Police Stn for demanding Spl status for AP. I went and met them at police station in solidarity. We condemn their detention and fully support demand for spl status of AP. (sic)”

This came a day after five YSR Congress MPs resigned from the Lok Sabha raising the same demand. In their resignation letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, YSR Congress MPS, V Vara Prasada Rao, YV Subba Reddy, PV Midhun Reddy, YS Avinash Reddyand Mekapati Rajamohan Reddy, said, “I hereby tender my resignation of my seat in the house with immediate effect.”

The latest protests by key Andhra parties against the prime minister are taking place amidst growing discontent amongst Modi’s own Dalit MPs, who’ve separately written to him highlighting the plight of their community under the BJP rule. In a series of tweets on Saturday, BJP MP Udit Raj said, “Dalits r tortured at large scale after 2nd April country wide agitation . People from badmer, jalore, jaipur, gwalior, meerut , bulandshahr, karoli &other parts calling that not only anti reservatists but police also beating &slapping false cases. (sic)”

Raj repeated the same charge while speaking to Janta Ka Reporter on Sunday.

Raj also alleged that Dalit activists, who had taken part in this month’s Bharat Bandh, were being tortured by the BJP governments. He wrote, “Reports are pouring in that those Dalits who participated in agitation on 2 April are being tortured and it must be stopped. My confederation worker in gwalior is being tortured whereas he had not done anything wrong . He is crying for help.”

On Friday, BJP MP from UP’s Nagina, Yashwant Singh, wrote to Modi saying that absolutely nothing had been done during the four years of the BJP rule at the Centre for the upliftment of 30 crore Dalits in India. This followed another letter by Chote Lal Kharwar, tribal MP from Robertsganj, alleging mistreatment by the Yogi Adityanath-led government in Uttar Pradesh.

Earlier this month, another Dalit BJP MP from Bahraich, Savitri Bai Phule, had held a rally in Lucknow demanding no changes in the Constitution or policy of reservation. Savitri Bai Phule, Chhota Lal and Ashok Kumar Dohre, all MPs from from Uttar Pradesh, have directly accused the Yogi government and NDA of growing atrocities on Dalits. This, according to analysts, is not a good news for the prime minister in the election year.

The BJP had won 73 out of 80 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh in 2014. This had significantly contributed to the party’s historic majority in the Lok Sabha. With alarming discontent in UP and among former NDA partners, the road to parliament in 2019 has suddenly become a lot more difficult for Modi.

  1. TDP’s protest is fully justified.Modi led BJP continuously making “fake” promises to nation at large and even in states to win elections. Each section of the society being betrayed by Centre GOVT.Worst of all party’s stalwarts tell blatant lies. Not only Kejriwal but other opposition leaders should also extend support to TDP’s call for special status to Andhra Pradesh as well as Dalits country wide.Atrocities contiously committed against them. The National Crime Records Bureau data for 2015-16 showed the number of crimes reported against Dalits had risen drastically mainly in UP,Rajasthan,Bihar and even in Gujarat.Rajasthan is leading the crimes list.3 years old Dalits boy was killed because he was riding a horse. This most inhumane crime committed in Thangadh in far no there has been no trial. On 1st Jan 2018 the 200th Anniversary of the Battle of Bhima Koregaon was celebrated by Dalits but (as media reports) turned into clashes as upper class persons got into their procession. Why n how police totally failed to give Dalits protection? Why only BJP is entitled for calling “Bharat Bandhs”(as BJP always did while in opposition)and taking out saffron processions where ever they wish and police is always there to protect them? Why our PM is silent? It is sheer violation of “The Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Prevention of Atrocities Act 1986 passed by then GOVT led by PM RajivGandhi.
