Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday welcomed India’s hero Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman back home. Both took to Twitter soon after the captured Indian Air Force officer was released by Pakistan.

Wing Commander Abhinandan

Modi’s tweet read, “Welcome Home Wing Commander Abhinandan! The nation is proud of your exemplary courage. Our armed forces are an inspiration for 130 crore Indians. Vande Mataram!”

Sitharaman wrote, “Jai Hind.” Her subsequent tweet read, “Proud of you Wing Commander #AbhinandanVarthaman. The entire nation appreciates your valour and grit. You held your calm in the face of adversity. You are an inspiration to our youth. Salute. Vande Mataram.”

The Ministry of Defence too expressed similar sentiments in its social media post. The official Twitter handle of the defence ministry’s spokesperson posted, “For honour of the Nation, you kept duty ahead of your personal safety. Wearing India Colours on your sleeve, you showed calm and poise in adversity. #Abhinandan you created history and in you we find the best of the Indian Armed Forces. Bravo #AirWarrior, more power to you.”

Modi has come under heavy criticism for not uttering anything since the news of the Indian Air Force officer’s capture and the downing of MiG 21 came in. He was criticised for continuing with his election rallies even during the national crisis.

Sitharaman faced social media roasting after BJP’s Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy revealed that she was not informed about the air strikes, carried out by the Indian Air Force deep inside Pakistan on Tuesday.
