Five years after he sacrificed a minor boy in a religious ritual, a self styled godman in Odisha was awarded the death penalty by a court in Indian state of Odisha.
The sessions court in the Jajpur district on Tuesday pronounced death sentence against the godman, Pitamber Gaipei, after examining 22 witnesses and going through their depositions.
Gaipei had made the human sacrifice of the eight-year-old child, Srikant Bag, on February 11, 2010.
The public prosecutor Kishore Kar said, “The court awarded death sentence to the godman describing the crime as ‘rarest of rare’.”
Kar added that the godman was arrested on February 18, 2010 after he was found distributing the child’s blood to womenfolk and claiming that drinking it would make them immortal.
He also said that Gaipei had taken minor before beheading him and burying his head near the deity’s statue. The police had recovered the boy’s beheaded body from a drain in Icchanagarpatana, a village close to where he lived, on February 12, 2011. Police later arrested the godman after the boy’s family filed a police complaint.
