Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has launched a blistering attack against his party chief for not owning up the defeat in three states in the just-concluded assembly polls. Speaking the annual endowment lecture to Intelligence Bureau officers on Monday, Gadkari said that if he was the party president, he would be responsible for the defeat of ‘MPs and MLAS.’
“If I am the party president, and my MPs and MLAs are not doing well, then who is responsible? I am,” Times of India quoted the union minister as saying.
His criticism for his own party chief, second within a week, assumes significance in light of the BJP’s defeat in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh. Only last week, Gadkari was quoted as saying, “Success has many fathers but failure is an orphan, as when there is success, there will be a race to take credit but in case of failure, everybody will start pointing fingers at each other.” He had later taken to social media blaming media for twisting his words to create a rift between him and the BJP leadership.
The same week, Gadkari had also criticised Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister for calling Hanuman a ‘Dalit’ and likened his comments to a ‘no-ball.’
Gadkari, in his speech at the IB event, also praised India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. He said, “I liked Nehru’s speeches. He said India is not a nation but a population.” He then added that tolerance was the biggest asset of the India system and ‘the attitude that ‘I did this because someone else did it (as well)’ is, to me, not right.’
Gadkari, in his hour-long speech spoke extensively about positive India. Reacting to his speech, senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal tweeted, “Gadkari : Tolerance is India’s biggest asset Depleted by Modiji Gadkari : Unity in diversity is our speciality Diversity targeted by Modiji since 2014 Gadkari : one who knows everything is mistaken Modiji needs to listen to Gadkari !”

Gadkari’s comments are being seen as a direct attack on the leadership within the BJP. It’s believed that the RSS project Gadkari as the next prime minister since he enjoys friendship across political parties.
