News programme turned into comedy as Sambit Patra appears on India Today as guest presenter

Not too long ago Cobrapost exposed the dirty design of Indian media through its ‘Operation 136’ highlighting how dozens of media houses were willing to promote Hindutva ideology in exchange of money. The videos collected by undercover journalist Pushp Sharma made quite disturbing viewing. As if this was not enough, now political parties’ spokespersons are serving as ‘guest anchors’ conducting debates on national television.

India Today groups, one of the biggest media houses of the country, have been inviting ‘guest anchors’ from different political parties on certain weekends to conduct debates on their various news platforms, including Aaj Tak and their English channel India Today.

India Today has had various ‘guest anchors’ conduct the so-called news ‘debates,’ with Bharatiya Janata Party’s Babul Supriyo, Congress’ Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Sambit Patra to name a few.

Last night, conducting the debate on ‘Is the united opposition a real challenge to Modi,’ Sambit Patra gave a glimpse of ‘unbiased’ and ‘neutral’ work of ‘journalism.’

Patra began with a pledge of being neutral while giving everyone on the panel a fair chance to speak. Then, he went on to give the Congress party’s spokesperson Priyanka Chaturvedi an opportunity to ‘answer’ his question on the whereabouts of the Congress President Rahul Gandhi.

As Chaturvedi started to answer, Patra constantly kept heckling her and didn’t let her speak. When the Congress spokesperson tried to remind Patra that a journalist should be unbiased and neutral, he went on to claim that he is the most unbiased anchor in the world.

Making fun of the so-called news exercise, Patra went on to add, “You don’t question a journalist… This is the problem with the politicians.”

While the concept of spokesperson being periodically called to anchor prime time show provides quite a lot of entertainment, it contributes nothing to the journalism. Patra, however, found plenty of support from Twitterati, who sarcastically urged India Today management to consider extending his contract since he was capable of giving Republic TV’s Arnab Goswami a stiff competition.

From not letting Chaturvedi speak to disabling her audio, Patra proved his ‘unbiasedness.’

This is the second time within a week that Patra has made the headlines. Previously, Janta Ka Reporter, in its report, had exposed Patra revealing BJP’s dangerous plan for 2019 Lok Sabha polls.
