Remember Thushar Vellappally, who unsuccessfully contested from Waynad in Kerala against Rahul Gandhi as the NDA candidate? He has been arrested in UAE for alleged financial fraud. According to local media reports in Kerala, Vellappally, who ‘s state president of Bharat Dharma Jana Sena was arrested in Ajman in a cheque bouncing case.
He’s currently in Ajman Central Jail after local police arrested him from a hotel. Vellappally is accused of issuing a cheque for one crore dirham, which is approximately Rs 19 crore, to his local UAE partner.
The case is believed to be 10 years old when Vellappally had issued the cheque to his local partner after his debt-ridden company was dissolved. Vellappally’s father Vellappally Natesan, who’s also the General Secretary of Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana said that his son was trapped by his ex-business partner, who called him to the UAE on the pretext of settling the dispute out of court.
They were holding negotiations in a hotel when the police arrested him on Tuesday. A report by Khaleej Times said that he may be released in ‘a day or two.’
The Ajman Police has, however, not released any official statement on the matter.
Meanwhile, activist Rahul Easwarhas urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene in order to secure Vellappally’s release. He wrote on Twitter, “Hope PM @narendramodi jis team will help a trapped Malayali Leader in UAE. Sri Tushar Vellappaly was called in pretext of negotiation of a decade old case & was arrested. Sri Tushar is a vibrant community leader from Kerala acceptable to all communities.”
