Navjot Kaur, the wife of former India cricketer, Navjot Sindhu on Monday joined Congress party. Also joining Congress in presence of Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh in Delhi was ex-Akali MLA Pargat Singh.
Kaur hinted that her husband too may join Congress soon.
She said, “Hum do shareer ek aatma hai, fir ek durse ke bina kab tak reh paenge?”
Navjot Kaur Sidhu is a former MLA and has represented Amritsar in Punjab Vidhan Sabha. She resigned recently after quitting the state assembly. She had quit BJP in October last month after her husband too parted ways with the saffron party.
She had later alleged the party always asked her to keep “quiet” and that its leaders never stood by her whenever she raised voice against SAD.
Kaur, who had been at loggerheads with the SAD-BJP led government in the state over the development projects in Amritsar, also claimed that BJP workers were being harassed at the behest of Akali Dal and late RSS leader Jagdish Gagneja was against the continuance of the alliance.
She said she would not resign from the Assembly and continue to carry out development works in Amritsar East Assembly constituency.
“I always thought of raising voice against wrongdoings …When I demanded money for my area, funds were not released. I was told such things happen in politics. I approached my party and leaders many a times, asking them for funds.
As for Pargat Singh, he also a former Punjab MLA after he quit the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal. He is a former Hockey Olympian and was captain of the Indian hockey team.
The former India hockey captain had formed Awaaz-e-Punjab with Kaur’s husband and Bains brothers. But the front failed to take off with Balwinder and Simarjeet Singh Bains announcing a new front, Lok Insaaf Party, in the election-bound Punjab.
Sources said Kaur and Singh had met Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday and decided to join the party fold. The two later met Amarinder Singh at his residence here and discussed the formalities of their joining.
Party sources said Sidhu was away in Mumbai and was likely to meet the Congres leadership in the days to come and likely to join along with his wife and Pargat Singh on November 28.
