Narrow escape for Rahul Gandhi in fire scare as aarti goes wrong

Congress President Rahul Gandhi had a lucky escape in Madhya Pradesh on Sunday as his supporters’ attempt to perform aarti (a religious ritual by Hindus) went horribly wrong.

Rahul Gandhi had completed an eight kilometer long road show in the state’s Jabalpur, when a group of Congress supporters brought a multi-tiered lamp (diya) to perform their leader’s aarti. Little did they realise that a man was carrying a bunch of gas balloons nearby. Soon the balloons went in huge flames, causing scare to Rahul’s safety.

The Congress president was in an open jeep with party colleagues Kamalnath and Jyotiraditya Scindia, not far from where the fire took place. Cops deployed at the venue said that there was no security lapse.

The superintendent of Police Amit Singh was quoted by NDTV, “They were Congress workers… The mandatory 15 feet distance was very much there and there was no lathi-charge … nowhere is it mentioned in the blue book that workers can’t hold balloons and perform aarti.”

Aarti has become a controversial topic in the run up to polls as the BJP accused the Congress of wooing Hindu voters projecting itself as friends of Hindus. Rahul had also visited several temples in the run-up to Gujarat assembly polls last year.

Madhya Pradesh goes to polls on 28 November, while the results will be announced two weeks later. The opinion polls broadcast by ABP News on Saturday said that the Congress was all set to dislodge the state’s BJP government first time in over a decade.

Meanwhile, while addressing a gathering at the Raddi Chowk at the end of his road-show, Rahul slammed the Centre’s Narendra Modi government for unemployment while asserting that his party alone could create jobs for youth.

“We brought green revolution, white revolution, computer revolution. But Prime Minister Narendra Modi and MP Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan have made false promises,” the Congress chief said.  He further added, “I can assure (you) with full confidence that the Congress alone will generate employment for the youth. We don’t lie. If we come to power, we are going to provide employment,” he was quoted by PTI.
