MPs walked out of meeting in protest after Naqvi refuses to condemn lynchings

Members of the parliamentary panel on minority affairs today walked out from a meeting when Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi “refused” to condemn the recent incidents of lynchings.

naqvi refuses condemn lynchings

“In today’s meeting all six MPs, including myself, requested Naqviji to condemn the lynching of innocent boy Junaid and other such incidents. We also wanted to place it on record in the proceedings of the meeting,” JD(U) MP Ali Anwar Ansari said.

The members also sought a two-minute silence be observed during the meeting as mark of respect for those killed by mobs.

However, sources said, Naqvi rejected the MPs’ demand as it was “not part of the meeting’s agenda”.

Ansari, along with other five other MPs –E T Mohammed Basheer from Muslim League, Idris Ali from TMC, Joy Abraham from Kerala Congress and M I Shanavas and Mausam Noor from Congress, walked out from the meeting of the consultative committee on minority affairs.

Ansari said all the victims in these lynching incidents belonged to minority communities and there is nothing wrong in condemning such incidents.

The sources said issues pertaining to the functioning of the ministry were supposed to be discussed in the meeting.

The instance comes a day after a protest demonstrations named “Not in my Name” were held in the national capital and other parts of the country to condemn the recent mob killings.

Earlier in the day, Naqvi asserted that there was no atmosphere of fear or insecurity prevailing among the community.

Suspecting the role of some “hostile forces” behind such incidents, he said such “tactics” will not be allowed to succeed.

He, however, stressed that the incidents cannot be justified and pitched for tough action against the perpetrators.

On Thursday, Naqvi had evoked angry reactions from social media users after he said that there was no atmosphere of fear or insecurity prevailing among the community.

Facebook users poked fun at the union minister with some sarcastically suggesting that the people on Wednesday had gathered across India and world to enjoy ‘beautiful weather.’

Vipul Barodiya wrote, “People just came out for a beautiful weather in notinmyname campaign?? Mr. Naqvi you alone do not represent the minorities.!!

“And you are saying about minority which is Not even your right to … Even we as an indian(not hindu nor musLim) are insecure…(sic)”

Syed Noor Ahmed said, “How can he keep a blind eye on masive protest all over India by …not only minorities but also from secular minded majority. He being a Modi bhakt… this type of statement is expected. (sic)”

NonalBarla Guttu wrote, “His boss tells killing is not good at least for publicity. You will not die if you just protest against lynching and give some good statement, than just enjoying life of a minister and your qualifications is your religion in BJP. (sic)”

Chetan Shah said, “Simple! Kal jab dekha ki virodh waakai bahut bada hua hai n white house ke baahar modi ka bhi virodh hua tha…..toh bolne aagaye…..aur bol bhi raha hai toh jhut woh bhi bjp ke kehne pe…. (sic)”

  1. Is there any humanity left in him? Even Mr. Modi has expressed his disappointment why Mr. Naqvi is trying to act so ignorant? It seems he has become so greedy for the chair that makes him so lean, he doesn’t deserve the ministry at least Minority portfolio…
