A day after Hyderabad University became a centre of mass protests leading to ’emergency like situation,’ the university administration claimed to have restored peace on the campus on Thursday.

“Messes, which had been shut down due to the strike by non-teaching staff opened today…they (non-teaching staff) have resumed their duties from today in the larger interest of the university,” HCU Registrar M Sudhakar told PTI.

But Sudhakar’s claims aside, gory details of the attrocities allegedly at the behest of the university’s Vice Chancellor, Appa Rao Podile, have emerged.

Students complained of denial of access to drinking water, shortages of food due to sudden “shutting down of Students’ Mess” and restriction on internet access all throughout Wednesday night.

On Wednesday, one student Vaikhari Aryat wrote a blog highlighting the ’emergency-like situation caused by the university administration allegedly ‘to teach them a lesson.’

Their desperate appeal evoked sharp reaction from around the country particularly those studying in other institutions.

Closer home, students from a neighbouring business school in Hyderabad too extended their support to the distressed students of Hyderabad University.

Abdul Aziz, who works in one of Hyderabad’s institutions wrote, “Modi’s ” Bharat mata ka laal ” and Smriti Irani’s ” Child ” have been kicked and beaten up mercilessly in HCU. Did Bandaru Dattatreya write any letter to MHRD ?
If anyone gets to meet Dattatreya, do let him know that Tolichowki falls under his constituency and he has not visited the place even once after the general elections in May 2014.”

JNU Students’ Union’s Vice President Shehla Rashid too took to Facebook to register her protests against the crackdown against the students in Hyderabad.

“Food, water and Internet has been cut-off and students are struggling to survive! But what they can’t cut-off is the outpouring of solidarity. We marched yesterday in support of HCU. We will march again. Release all HCU students and faculty unconditionally. Revoke cases on all students. Remove murderer Appa Rao. We love drenching ourselves in colors; but just not today. Today, for HCU, for Rohith, for Uday, for the arrested comrades.”

Meanwhile, many parents complained that they had no idea about the fate of the 25 students arrested on charges of vandalism by the local police.

25 students and two faculty members of HCU were sent to judicial remand in the night and are lodged in Cherlapally Central Prison.

Rohith Vemula’s mother Radhika too made an attempt to enter the university campus on Wednesday but was denied by the posse of police personnel deployed at the main gate. So was the JNU students’ Union leader Kanhaiya Kumar.

A mass delegation of students is expected to lodge its complaint before the National Human Rights Commission on 28 March.

The group posted their demands on Facebook, “Punish the killers of Rohith; Remove Appa Rao as VC; Remove all charges against students and teachers; Smriti Irani and Bandaru Dattatreya must resign; Enact the Rohith Act; End saffronisation, caste discrimination on campuses; Rise up against ABVP hooliganism; Book Appa Rao, Dattatreya and Smriti Irani under SC/ST atrocities Act.”

The students are incensed over the return of Podile from a long leave. They blame him along with the local BJP MP, Bandaru Dattatreya and the Union HRD Minister for the death of the Dalit research scholar Rohith Vemula in January.

On 25 March, the JNU students have planned a solidarity march on the campus between Ganga dhaba and Ad Block.
