Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday lashed out at those who accused him of politicising rapes.
He said, ” Haan main raajniti kar raha hoon, janta ki raajniti kar raha hoon. Janta ke dukh baant raha hoon, balatkaar peediton se milne gaya. Jhuggiyon mein aag lagi, unse milne gaya, Modiji bhi agle do mahine videsh daure band karke dilli mein police ka prashasan theek karein (Yes, I’m doing polics, but mine is politics of common people. I’m sharing the pain of ordinary citizen. I went to meet the rape victims and those who were affected by the huge fire in slums. I suggest Modiji too cancel his foreign visits for next two months and instead work on improving police administration in the city.)”
Delhi has witnessed a huge rise in the rape incidents involving minors including a toddler. While talking to reporters on Sunday, the police chief, BS Bassi had accused ‘some people’ of politicising rapes in Delhi.
Kejriwal on Monday announced new measures to contain this menace by forming a special task force headed by his deputy, Manish Sisodia.
Kejriwal has asked Modi to hand over the control of Delhi police ‘at least for a year’ for him to be able to curb the growing incidents of rapes in the capital.
On Sunday, he launched a blistering attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi warning that he will ‘not let him sleep peacefully’ until rapes didn’t stop in Delhi.
On Monday, he said that more than 1500 rapes had been committed since 1 January this year but only ‘one has been punished asking media to highlight the questionable functioning of Delhi police instead of ‘constantly abusing me.’
