Hundreds of protesters were waiting to greet Modi with black flags and balloons upon his arrival in Chennai. Protesters even climbed onto a big hoarding outside the airport. Even the air route of the prime minister was changed in the last minute as protesters were flying black balloons.

If this was not enough, then the local authorities were forced to create a new road by demolishing a wall of IIT Madras so that he could attend his second function at the adjacent cancer institute building.

The unprecedented protests against Modi caused a huge traffic jam spread across six kms stretch in the Tamil Nadu capital. Meanwhile, MDMK chief Vaiko called the prime minister a “coward” for taking a chopper instead of going ahead with his planned road show.

Modi’s schedule was changed in the last minute following the protests. You can see both the original and the revised schedule below.

Hashtag #GoBackModi has been a top trend on Twitter globally for several hours now with users expressing their anger against the prime minister. The protesters have hit the streets against Modi expressing anger against his government’s inability to form a Cauvery Water Management Board.

The protests over Cauvery water dispute has already forced at least IPL matches to move out of Chennai. All the matches of Chennai Super Kings have been shifted to Pune amidst mammoth protests over the water dispute with Karnataka.
