MLA unfurls J&K flag, say ‘Centre eroding Kashmir’s identity’

Independent MLA Engineer Sheikh Abdul Rashid on Sunday hoisted the Jammu and Kashmir flag at Lal Chowk, asserting that New Delhi has to accept the distinct identity of the state.

According to media reports, Rashid vowed on Sunday to protect his state`s “distinct identity” and accused successive governments at the Centre of “colonial behaviour”.

“Delhi has played with our sentiments and reneged on its promises. But, unfortunately our local leaders, be it National Conference or Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, have surrendered our national pride to save their chair,” legislator Engineer Rashid was reported saying at a public meet in Srinagar.

Emphasizing that Jammu and Kashmir has its own flag, constitution and anthem which were guaranteed by parliament through the 1952 Delhi Agreement, Rashid said, “We have got the state flag after the Delhi agreement. The flag represents the sentiments of Kashmiris. We have fought for it. We will not allow anyone to play with the sanctity of this flag.”

Demanding that June be declared as the state flag day, Rashid was reported saying, “Kashmiris will not rest unless 1952 Delhi agreement is restored and respected by New Delhi in letter and spirit.”

Rashid further accused the Bharatiya Janata Party-Peoples Democratic Party (BJP-PDP) ruling alliance of pushing Kashmiris to the wall, and Chief Minister Sayeed of dancing to the tunes of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
