All India Muslim Personal Law Board has expelled Maulana Salman Nadvi for suggesting the shifting of the Babri Masjid site from Ayodhya. Nadvi was widely condemned for making the suggestion after his meeting with the Art of Living founder Ravi Shankar, a known supporter of the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Qasim Ilyas, a member of AIMPLB, told reporters that Nadvi was expelled he had gone against the AIMPLB’s unanimous stand that the mosque could not be gifted, sold or shifted.
Nadvi on Saturday had defended his stand that there ought to be an out of court settlement in the Ayodhya Ram Janambhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute. In its executive body meeting on Friday, the AIMPLB had decided to take a disciplinary action against Nadvi.
“You are talking against the stand of the Board. If you have different option, then you must talk in meeting and not publically. Everyone has condemned what happened. You cannot defame the name of the Board. If no action is taken, image of the board will be affected,” SQR Ilyas, AIMPLB member, was quoted by News18.
The 16th century Babri Masjid was demolished by Hindutva zealots on 6 December 1992. Its demolition had caused a widespread communal riots resulting in the killings of thousands of people, mostly Muslims.
