Maneka Gandhi says online trolling of women will be considered violence


Union minister for woman and child welfare, Minister Maneka Gandhi has said that online trolling of women will be considered violence in future.


Speaking on NDTV’s Agenda programme, Gandhi said,”Women have to deal with tremendous viciousness online, Initially, the operators would not come and talk to us and cooperate about giving details. But now they have come on board.”

The minister said that she had already written to the home ministry to come up with a code for online behaviour.

Gandhi said that it was a journalist’s complaint that had brought the problem to light. But they were now sensitised to the threats that many faced in the cyberworld and it would be treated as violence.

Women social media users, particularly journalists, had had face the onslaught of social media trolls for their criticism of the central government.

Gandhi’s proposal will give a plenty of hope to these women social media users.
