Maharashtra cabinet reshuffle: Pankaja Munde removed from Water Conservation Ministry

In a late night dramatic cabinet reshuffle, Maharashtra chief minister, Devendra Fadnavis, removed the controversial minister, Pankaja Munde, from Water Conservation Ministry.

She will, however, continue to retain the Rural Development and Women and Child Development portfolios.

Munde had caught media limelight in April this year for taking selfie while on a trip to visit the drought-hit Latur.

Fadnavis, according to Indian Express, has also stripped Vinod Tawde of the Medical Education portfolio. He was handed the Ministry of Minorities and Wakf along with the existing portfolios of School Education, Higher and Technical Education, Culture and Sports.

The late night reshuffle was conducted primarily to restructure portfolios for “effective administrative management.”

Munde, according to sources, was dropped from Water Conservation Ministry because of courting controversy earlier this year.

Senior minister Chandrakant Patil has been made new Revenue Minister in place of Eknath Khadse, who had to resign after his name cropped up in the underworld don, Dawood Ibrahim’s most-dialled list and corruption charges.

The Ministry of Agriculture, which was also held by Khadse, has gone to Pandurang Phundkar.

Ram Shinde has now been given the Water Conservation portfolio.

The low-profile Girish Mahajan, a staunch rival of Khadse in north Maharashtra, has been rewarded with the additional portfolio of Medical Education, which was divested from Tawde. Mahajan will continue with his original Water Resources Ministry.
