Cops suspended for booking RSS man, Digvijay Singh writes to PM Modi

Congress leader Digvijay Singh targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the suspension of three Madhya Pradesh policemen, booked on the charge of attempting to murder an RSS man who had posted objectionable comments allegedly against a particular religion, seeking to know if this was his way to “empower” Muslims.

In his letter to Modi yesterday, the Congress general secretary also asked if policemen would dare take action against RSS or BJP functionaries if they violate laws “as was done by the RSS worker” Suresh Yadav.

“Is this your good governance? Will policemen dare take action against BJP or RSS men? I want to ask is it your scheme for empowering Muslims?” he asked, referring to the Modi’s recent remark that Muslims must be empowered.

Besides taking up the issue with the Prime Minister, he flagged it with the National Commission for Minorities (NCM) chairman Naseem Ahmad today and asked the latter to look into the issue.

Singh also expressed concerns over the role of state Home Minister Bhupendra Singh behind the suspension of the policemen, including an Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), and asked if such action will make Muslims have faith in the state administration.

“Take immediate action against those involved, be it the Chief Minister (Shivraj Singh Chouhan), the minister or senior police official in the matter, if you honestly want to ensure the welfare of Muslims. Or else, we will consider it (the empowerment slogan) as another jumla (catchphrase) of yours,” he said in the letter.

The Madhya Pradesh government had last week suspended three policemen, including Balaghat ASP Rajesh Sharma on the charge of attempting to murder Yadav, arrested for circulating objectionable post about AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi.

The police, after receiving a complaint that Yadav had posted some comments about Owaisi on WhatsApp, brought him to Baihar police station on the evening of September 25.

Yadav escaped and hid in the nearby house. However, police caught him and brought him back to the station. They booked him under IPC section 295 (a) (outraging religious feeling). He was allegedly beaten up brutally in police custody.
