The Madhya Pradesh government has reacted angrily after the cyber cell of the Delhi Police arrested Abhishek Mishra, who describes himself as a social media activist and YouTuber from his house in Bhopal. Taking a dim view of his arrest, the state’s Congress government called the arrest unlawful. The Madhya Pradesh government has reportedly written Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik to register its protest.
“The MP government registered objection in its letter to Delhi Police Commissioner Wednesday. The states Home Department has described the action of Delhi Police as violation of the Supreme Court directives,” news agency PTI quoted an official from the state public relations department.
The state police has also strongly objected to not being informed about the Delhi Police’s action adding that this amounted to violation of the Supreme Court order.
The cyber cell of the Delhi Police reportedly raided Mishra’s house in Bhopal’s Rajeev Nagar around 8:30 on 22 January for allegedly hurting the religious sentiments through his social media post. According to Mishra’s father, Ashok Mishra, some unknown persons ahd arrived at their house and took away their son. The family first thought that Mishra had been abducted since there were no cops in uniform.
After the family contacted the local police, they learnt that Abhishek Mishra had been arrested by Praveen Kumar, Inspector, Cyber Crime Unit, Special Cell, Delhi Police.
Mishra was produced before a city court in Delhi and sent to police custody.
