Months after bowling legend Anil Kumble stepped down as the head coach of the Indian cricket team, a leaked email has suggested a plot by Virat Kohli in his unceremonious ouster. A report by news agency AFP said that it had accessed email sent by a BCCI official accusing Kohli, the captain of the current Indian team, of applying pressure on the BCCI officials to force his exit.
In the said email by Diana Edulji, the news agency claimed, she wrote to board administrator Vinod Rai that Kohli ‘frequently sent SMSs to the CEO on which you acted and there was a change in the coach.’
The email allegedly wrote, “Mr Kumble a legend in his own right was subjected to loss of face and made to look like a villain.” Edulji also reportedly said that Kumble was ‘gracious enough to move on for which I respect him.’ AFP quoted her saying in her email, “There also, rules were broken and I had raised objections back then.”
The latest revelation comes a year after Indian Express had reported that Kohli sent text messages to a BCCI official targeting Kumble. One of his text messages had read, “He is overbearing.”
The content of Edulji’s email reportedly emanated from a recently controversy surrounding her and a member of the Indian women’s cricket team, Mithali Raj. Mithali had accused Edulji of abusing her position as an influential BCCI member to hurt her cricketing career. This was after Mithali wrote an explosive letter to BCCI CEO Rahul Johri last month.
She had written, “To put things in perspective, I have always reposed faith in Diana Edulji and have always respected her and her position as a member of the COA, Never did I think she will use her position against me, more after hearing what all I had to go through in the Caribbean as I had spoken to her about it . Her brazen support in the press with regard to the decision of my benching in the semi final of the t/20 World Cup has left me deeply distressed, more because she knows the real facts having spoken to me. Thereafter her statement saying ‘selection is not the COA’s headache’ is like suggesting there is no system of checks and balances and anyone can do anything and get away because they have the backing of people in power.”
During Kumble term as the head coach, India had won Test series in the West Indies before winning at home against New Zealand, England, Bangladesh and Australia.
