Leaked audio exposes BJP, leader heard claiming how he ordered Sabarimala priest to commit contempt of Supreme Court

A leaked audio, now gone viral on social media, has exposed the BJP on the raging controversy over the Supreme Court’s order, allowing women to enter the Sabarimala temple. According to the leaked audio, BJP’s Kerala unit President, Sreedharan Pillai, is heard claiming how he ordered the head priest of the Sabarimala temple to shut the doors for the shrine for women even at the cost of committing contempt of court.

In the viral, Pillai is heard saying how the head priest called him to consult over closing the temple’s doors when the shrine opened for five days last month. He is heard telling a gathering, “The Thantris community has more faith in BJP and its state chief. When women were about to enter Sabarimala, he called me up. I had given him a word and it coincidentally came true. He was a bit upset over shutting the doors of sanctum sanctorum fearing it would invite contempt of court. I was among the few he had contacted that time.”

Pillai confessed that he told the priest to not worry about contempt of court assuring him that he was not alone and ‘there would be tens of thousands of people to be with him (priest).’ “Upon our word, he took a firm stand. That decision had actually left the police and the administration baffled. We hope he’d repeat it again. Later, I became the first accused and he the second accused on charges of contempt of court… As we both figured in, his confidence increased.”

A contempt petition has been filed against Pillai and the head priest of the Sabarimala temple. The Hindutva goons had violently attacked women reporters last month as they reached the venue to cover the possible entry of women into the temple.

Though the BJP has not denied the content of the audio, Pilla was quoted by news agency ANI as saying, “So what? I am a lawyer, he had taken legal opinion from me. Many CPM ministers have taken opinion from me.”

Fearing the consequences, the priest has been quick to deny ever speaking to Pillai saying that he held discussions on the topic only with his family.

Meanwhile, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has slammed the BJP saying that the party stood exposed for being responsible behind the last month’s violence. He tweeted, “The odious politics and perfidious ways of BJP stand exposed. Evidence has surfaced that BJP leaders in the State connived to create trouble in Sabarimala. It must be noted that their State president himself was involved in the ruse. This is highly condemnable.”
