Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday unequivocally condemned the attack on school children in Haryana’s Gurgaon on Wednesday, allegedly by the terrorists belonging to Rajpur Karni Sena.
Speaking on the eve of the Republic Day in Delhi, Kejriwal said that he had not been able to sleep the whole night after watching the video of school children being attacked.
He said, “Yesterday some people pelted stones on school children in Gurugram. I couldn’t sleep entire night. If our children are pelted with stones on Republic Day eve, a few kms away from nation’s capital, it is a matter of shame for the entire nation. We must hang our heads in shame. Whatever your issues may be, you simply can’t raise your hands at our children.”
He reminded people how they were silent when the members of similar ideology carried out their attacks against Muslims and Dalits in the past adding that it was time to speak up.
He added, “When they killed Muslims, we remained silent. When they burnt Dalits, beat up Dalit, we remained silent. But friends, today they’ve started pelting stones at your kids. Today they have entered your homes. You mustn’t remain silent now. Now we must speak and raise our voices against this. God forbid, tomorrow stones are pelted at our and your children.”
The video of the school bus with frightened children crying and crouching inside the bus as the Hindutva goons vandalised the bus, had gone viral. The video had evoked angry reactions from the members of civil society, actors and politicians from the opposition parties. Noted among them was actor Farhan Akhtar, who wrote, “Attacking a school bus is not an agitation. It is terrorism. The people who did it are terrorists. Please refer to them as such.”
Congress President Rahul Gandhi had tweeted without explicitly condemning the Karni Sena goons, “There will never be a cause big enough to justify violence against children. Violence and hatred are the weapons of the weak. The BJP’s use of hatred and violence is setting our entire country on fire: Rahul Gandhi on
#KarniSena’s terrorism against children”
Actor Prakash Raj rightly questioned the diplomatic reaction of the opposition parties when he tweeted this, “Children of my country shiver with fear and cry….as karni Sena attacks a school bus….The elected Government looks the other way..The opposition party diplomatically reacts…aren’t u all ashamed to trade our children’s safety ..for ur vote bank politics. (sic)”
Later, known Hindutva trolls had published the phone numbers of Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Anurag Kashyap on social media platforms while encouraging their supporters to call and abuse the filmmakers.
