Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Monday issued clarification on his statement comparing the JNU Students Union leader Kanhaiya Kumar with the famous freedom fighter Bhagat Singh.
He told ANI, “It (comparing Kanhaiya with Bhagat Singh) was said in response to question by someone in the audience. Bhagat Singh was a young man in his 20s with Marxist beliefs who had great passion for motherland. Kanhaiya has same qualities in common. Obviously, circumstances were different. He was fighting colonial rule, Kanhaiya is fighting for his beliefs in a different democracy.”
Tharoor, while visiting the JNU campus had addressed the students for over 40 minutes. In his speech, Tharoor had compared Kanhaiya with Bhagat Singh.
His statement was widely criticised on Twitter with users mainly his ideological opponents began posting critical messages fervently.
By Monday noon, Shashi Tharoor had become a national trending topic on twitter prompting the Congress MP to issue a clarification.
Another Congress leader, Ghulam Nabi Azad, too joined the debate and said that Bhagat Singh could not be compared with anyone.
He said, “Bhagat Singh ek hi the, kisi se unki tulna nahi ho sakti, aur aajkal ke kisi ladke ke saath nahi.”
