The Jharkhand’s BJP government on Thursday arrested noted economist and activist Jean Dreze along with his friend Vivek Kumar and one more person for organising an event on right to food. The arrested by the district authorities took place in the state’s Garhwa district.
The authorities within the Bishunpur police station limits said that they were organising the event without permission.
Their arrests evoked angry reactions from social media users and known activists. Congress President Rahul Gandhi took to Facebook to wrote, “I am extremely concerned about Mr. Dreze’s detention. The BJP is in a state of war with everybody who works for the poor & the downtrodden.”
Faced with public outrage, the authorities in Jharkhand later released him and others after they furnished personal bonds.
“They have been detained for organizing meeting under Bishunpur police station…local police are questioning them and they will be released after sometime”, a senior police official of Jharkhand was quoted by The Hindu.
Dreze was a member of the National Advisory Council during the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre.
