The strike by jewellers, who are protesting against a budgetary proposal to levy 1% excise duty on non-silver jewellery, entered 29th day on Wednesday.
FM Arun Jaitley in Budget 2016-17 had proposed one per cent excise duty on jewellery without input credit, or 12.5 per cent with input tax credit, on jewellery, excluding silver other than studded with diamonds and some other precious stones – the proposal caused the industry to shut shop across the nation.
On Wednesday, social media took to twitter to register their protests by launching a new hashtag #BJPagainstJewellers.
