Jaipur Metro starts today, 25% women operators

Metro services in the Pink city, Jaipur would be inaugurated on Wednesday at 11 am by the Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Vasundhara Raje.

Reported as the fastest metros in India in terms of construction time, the trains’s first segment is a 9.63 stretch from the city’s Mansarovar area to Chandpole. The metro facilities will roll out with a total of 10 four-coach trains and make 131 trips each day between two terminal stations at a frequency of 10 minutes in peak hours.

Jaipur Metro authorities also took a step towards equality as they hired six women operators from a total of 24. “I have always heard people say women can’t drive. By operating the metro, I wanted to shatter that image. That was the moving force behind me applying for the job,” Monika Mittal, who operated the Metro’s pre-run for the media on Tuesday told The Indian Express.

The metro will open for public use after 2 pm today. Unlike the Delhi Metro, there are no ‘women’s coaches’ in the Jaipur Metro as of now. C S Jeengar, Director (Operations and Systems Management) was reported saying, “Since we only had four coaches, we could not demarcate women-only coaches. But we do have reserved seating for women.”

The services are expected to enhance the tourism industry of the city further.
