The former boss of Karnataka’s IPS officer D Roopa has sued her for defamation claiming damages worth Rs 20 crore. DGP HN Sathyanarayana Rao, who retired recently, has filed a Rs 20 crore defamation case against DIG Roopa for “baseless allegations” against him.
Rao has been demanding apology from Roopa but she has refused to oblige him. Roopa, then the DIG (Prisons) had made the allegations that the former AIADMK leader V Sasikala was accorded VVIP treatment inside the jail in exchange of Rs 2 crore bribe. She made these allegations in a report to her superior DGP (Prisons) H S Sathyanarayana Rao
Addressing Rao in the report, she had said, ““There are rumours that the kitchen is continuing to function despite the issue being brought to your (Rao) notice. There is also a talk that Rs 2 crore has been paid as bribe for this.
“As unfortunately these allegations are also against you, it is requested that you look into the matter and take merciless disciplinary action against erroneous officials.”
The government of Karnataka had reacted swiftly by launching a high-level probe while also transferring both Rao and Roopa.
Refuting Roopa’s allegations at a press conference, Rao had said that no “undue favour” was shown to Sasikala. He had said that Sasikala was taking prison food as other inmates.
“There is no special kitchen. She is like any other prisoner,” he had said.
