The government of India has refused to share details of the amount Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan was paid for promoting the Atal Pension Yojna Scheme through advertisements, in reply to an RTI from an Ahmedabad-based activist.
After receiving the RTI, the government directed the department of financial services and the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) to reply to the query. In the reply, it was stated that the information sought was not available with the office as a record.
Jantakareporter.com has access to a copy of the RTI, which lists the following query and answer:
Query: Please provide the information regarding payment given to bollywood superstar Mr. Amitabh Bachchan for promoting Atal Pension Yojna Scheme.
Reply: The information sought is not available with this office of the public authority as a record as provided under section 2(i) of RTI Act, 2005 and hence information as per section 2(f) of RTI Act, 2005 cannot be provided
The department of financial services had released ads on the Atal Pension Yojna and Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojna featuring Bachchan, where he invites all Indians to be involved in these welfare schemes aimed at advancing conditions for the poor.
Prior to this decade, Bachchan was virtually blacked out of government campaigns and had before starred in the much-successful campaign for polio eradication launched under the Atal Behari Vajpayee government.
