The Congress has added one more seat to its tally in Karnataka as the party candidate Sowmya Reddy defeated BJP’s BN Prahlad by nearly 4,000 votes to win Bengaluru’s Jayanagar seat.
Daughter of former minister and veteran Congress leader Ramalinga Reddy, she got 54,045 votes, while the BJP’s Prahalad received 50,270. While the assembly elections for 222 seats were held last month in Karnataka, the election in Jayanagar was postponed following the death of the BJP candidate.
An elated Reddy later thanked his party and parents for her victory.

The bypolls were held on 11 June. Today’s victory for Congress comes in the aftermath of another victory by the party in Rajarajeshwari Nagar assembly constituency, where it defeated the saffron party last month.
This was also the first time both the JDS and the Congress had fought together. Although they fought the assembly elections separately, both parties stitched a post-poll alliance to form a government in the state. The JDS had pulled out of the race in Jayanagar to help the Congress candidate.
The Congress now has 80 seats in the 224-seat Karnataka assembly. The BJP has 104 MLAs while the JDS and alliance have 38 MLAs. Two seats were won by independent candidates, who had later expressed their support to the Congress.
