IIT fees increased from Rs90,000 to Rs 2 lakh


The central government has decided to hike the IIT fee from Rs. 90,000 to Rs. 2 lakh a year.

Quoting officials in the education ministry, NDTV reported that the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe students, those with disabilities and students from extremely poor families may not need to pay fees at all.

An IIT panel last month had recommended increasing the fees for IIT students.

It was left for the HRD ministry to approve the proposal, which she appears to have done.

The SCIC, a body comprising IIT directors and senior officials had adopted the report presented earlier by a sub-committee headed by IIT Bombay Director Devang Khakhar which had suggested hiking fees to Rs. 3 lakh while also recommending multiple sources of financing for the IITs.
