Police in Uttar Pradesh say that they have arrested a militant Hindutva leader for firing at the effigy of Mahatma Gandhi on his death anniversary. Pooja Shakun Pandey was arrested from Aligarh along with her husband Ashok Pandey on Wednesday.
Pandey is a local leader of militant Hindutva outfit Hindu Mahasabha in Uttar Pradesh.
Video of a group of Hindutva terrorists making an extraordinary attempt to recreate the assassination of India’s father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi on his death anniversary had gone viral last week. In the video, Hindu Mahasabha’s national secretary Pandey was seen firing at the effigy of Gandhi. Soon after she fired at the effigy, blood was seen oozing out of the effigy, spilling on to the ground.
The disgusting development had taken place in Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh, which is governed by BJP’s Yogi Adityanath, who had infamously founded an armed militant group Hindu Yuva Vahini.
Ashok Pandey, Pooja’s husband, had later told The Indian Express that he did not find anything wrong in his wife’s criminal act. “We don’t find anything wrong in it because the country celebrates Ravan dahan as well by recreating the scene. We have done the act inside our office premises,” he was quoted as saying.
These Hindutva terrorists have for long eulogised Nathuram Godse, who had killed Gandhi on 30 January 1948, blaming him for the partition of India.
Hindu Mahasabha has always marked 30 January as Shaurya Divas or Martyr’s Day but this is the first time the Hindutva militant group members have gone to the extent of recreating the terrorist act of 1948.
Wednesday’s incident had sent shockwaves on social media. Psephologist Yashwant Deshmukh tweeted, “Disgusting and sickening to the core. These moron should be arrested immediately and put in a mental asylum.” Journalist Sankarshan Thakur wrote, “The license that lunatic inheritors of the bigoted assassin of the Mahatma, #NathuramGodse have now
Neeraj Jadon, ASP Aligarh was quoted by news agency ANI, “Members of Hindu Mahasabha yesterday enacted Nathuram Godse’s assassination of MahatmaGandhi. They were glorifying Nathuram Godse. Case registered under relevant sections of IPC against 8 people & 4 unknown, arrests to be made soon. two people detained.”
