A young inter-religion couple, who got married recently despite opposition from the bride’s family, today approached the police here seeking protection, police said.

Manikandan of Kandhal in Udhagamandalam in Nilgiris district and Wajida of Ooty-Mysore Road were in love for the last four years and when they decided to get married, the girl’s family refused to let their daughter, a Muslim, marry a Hindu man, they said.

However, the couple got married at a temple in Podanur near here as per Hindu custom, they said.

Fearing for their lives, both came to the office of Commissioner of Police here and submitted a petition seeking protection, police said.
