Last week we reported how a gangrape victim was raped by same group of men second time in three years in Haryana.
Now to further compound the victim’s woes, a BJP leader assigned to protect women’s rights in the state has made immensely controversial comments saying that “Rapes have been committed since this world was created.”
“Our government is doing its job, but it will take time to find and arrest rapists,” Nirmal Bairagi, who heads the BJP’s State Women’s cell, was quoted by NDTV.
In a shocking incident, a Dalit woman was raped by five men and left to die in the bushes in Haryana’s Rohtak last week.
The same five had raped the victims three years ago in 2013.
“I will have to spend my entire life in constant fear of being raped again or killed,” said the woman in an interview to news agency AFP. “My life will never be the same. I am worried about my family’s safety,” she said.
The victim’s family had relocated to Rohtak after their daughter was first raped in 2013. The five accused, all reportedly belonging to upper caste were allegedly pressuring the family to negotiate a settlement worth Rs. 50 lakhs.
“We used to live in Bhiwani before. After the incident we fled to Rohtak to save ourselves from these men. I wanted to educate my children,” the mother of the victim said.
The police say the woman was found in the bushes in Rohtak’s Sukhpura Chowk area on Wednesday, after which she registered a complaint and is now in a government hospital.
The BJP won a historic mandate in Haryana in 2014 promising, among others, safety and improvement in the status of women. While completing his one year in office, the chief minister, Manohar Lal Khattar, had launched an unprecedented ad campaign claiming that his government’s initiatives had seen considerable improvement in the safety of women in Haryana.
