Haryana CM makes surprise visit to Panchkula police station, finds lights out; no woman police officer present

Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar made a surprise visit to Panchkula’s Sector 5 police station late on Sunday evening to take stock of how things were operating.

Having been invited to a religious function in Sector 5, Khattar was later drove into the local police station by his OSD Jawahar Yadav in a car without a beacon and without special security.

When he reached the station at 9:08 pm, Khattar to his surprise, found only three policemen there and suspected two of them to be drunk. The CM immediately called the Chief Medical Officer, VK Bansal asking him to conduct a medical examination. There was no electricity at the police station.

All the three policemen were sent to the Sector 6 General Hospital, where their blood samples were taken.

When the CM enquired from one of the policemen why there were only three officers deployed at the station, he replied that the entire force had gone to check the law and order situation in the religious function at Sector 5.

Amazingly, even though the Head Constable tried to inform the Station House Officer about the CM’s presence, Khattar took his phone and asked him not to tell anybody.

SHO Inspector Lalit Kumar, however, reached the police station immediately after sensing something was wrong with the way the phone was hung abruptly. He was then taken aback to see the CM checking all the rooms.

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner of Police Anil Dhawan and Deputy Commissioner Vivek Atray also reached the police station.

The CM asked the Deputy Commissioner why there was no light at the police station and ordered a restoration of power. Khattar also stiffened him saying a lady police officer should have been present at the station.

“I just came to check the condition of the police station, as I wanted to know whether the police stations in my state needed any improvement,” said the CM.

Khattar left the police station after about half-an-hour at 9:41 pm.
