AAP on Sunday appointed Gurpreet Singh Ghuggi as Punjab convener, reported PTI.
The political affairs committee of the party cleared Ghuggi’s name for the post, a party release said adding that he will take charge soon.
He has replaced Sucha Singh Chotepur, who was removed as convenor by AAP last month.
The party had removed Chotepur, after he was accused of taking bribe for assigning constituencies to party candidates next year’s assembly elections.
The decision Political Affairs Committee has now been sent to AAP’s disciplinary committee.
Ghuggi, though a popular name in Punjab, had shot to national fame after he took part in Star Plus’ show ‘The Great Indian Laughter Challenge.’
He had joined AAP in February this year.
He’s the second comedian from Punjab, who will be joining the AAP. In 2014, Bhagwant Mann had won Lok Sabha seat from Punjab’s Sangrur on AAP ticket.
Incidentally, Mann too had shot to national prominence after taking part in the same comedy reality show broadcast on Star Plus.
Ghuggi has acted in many Punjabi and Hindi movies.
Meanwhile, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who’s also the AAP national convenor, send a video message from Rome, where he is to attend the canonisation ceremony of Mother Teresa, that he was concerned about the situation in Punjab and would oversee the affairs of the party from next week.
“I will take over the reins of the party in Punjab. I will talk to good people who may be upset with the party. The corrupt and ineffective people will be thrown out,” he was quoted by Tribune.
