Google India on Wednesday paid homage to former President and Bharat Ratna APJ Abdul Kalam by displaying a black ribbon on its homepage.

The mark of respect on the Google India homepage signifies how much the ‘Missile Man of India’ was respected all across in the country, by all sections of people.

In the past too, Google India has marked anniversary occcasions of several prominent people including filmmaker Satyajit Ray, mathematics genius Shakuntala Devi and cine icon Raj Kapoor among others.

The black ribbon used for Dr. Kalam is unique since it has not been drafted into the page as a doodle but just as an icon placed below the search tab. On running the mouse over the ribbon, it reads, “In memory of Dr APJ Abdul Kalam”.

Tributes have been pouring in from the country and world over ever since news arrived on Monday evening of Dr. Kalam leaving for his heavenly abode. He had collapsed while delivering a lecture at the Indian Institute of Managment in Shillong.

Dr. Kalam was one of India’s most respected visionaries along with being one of the world’s best nuclear scientists.

He was closely involved in various space programs and was termed as the ‘Missile Man of India’. He also played a key role as operational in-charge of the 1998 Pokharan-II Tests before serving the country as President during 2002 to 2007.

A lot of people remember him as the man who transformed the Indian presidency during his tenure by making the Rashtrapati Bhawan much more accessible.

Ever since the news of his death, various ministers and chief ministers have come forward to name universities and schemes after Dr. Kalam.

Those who have paid tribute include Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Pranab Mukherjee and US and Russian Presidents, Barack Obama and Vladimir Putin.
