Geelani calls for protests on Friday and shutdown on Saturday against beef ban

Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani on Thursday called for ‘peaceful protests’ on Friday and ‘complete shutdown’ on Saturday against the Jammu and Kashmir High Court’s decision to ban the sale of beef in the state.

Jammu and Kashmir High Court on Wednesday had ordered banning of sale of beef in the state.

While pronouncing its decision on a PIL field by advocate Primokish Seth seeking slaughtering or killing of bovine animals, the bench comprising Justice Dhiraj Singh and Justice Janak Raj Kotwal said that the sale of beef was an offence punishable under section 298-A and possession of such slaughtered animal an act of punshabible under section 298-B of RPC.

It directed the DGP to ensure that appropriate directions were issued to all SSPs/SPs/ SHOs for enforcement of ban.

The bench held that ” Strict action shall be taken in accordance with law against those who practice or indulge in this activity.”
