Delhi police on Thursday filed an FIR against the Aam Aadmi Party MLA and the former law minister of Delhi, Somnath Bharti, in a case of domestic violence filed by his wife, Lipika Mitra.
The FIR was filed in the Dwarka police station in the capital under sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 498(a) (cruelty towards partner in marriage) of the Indian Penal Code.
Earlier in June, Mitra had approached the Delhi Commission for Women, accusing the Malviya Nagar legislator of domestic abuse. The issue had become hugely political because of the then DCW chief being a former Congress MLA.
He said, “I told her that both my parents are very ill and they need my attention. But she had her own issues. I’m, therefore, utterly shocked that she has gone ahead and file an FIR. I suspect that there’s more to this development than meets the eye.”
Mitra, on the other hand, has expressed ignorance about the FIR being filed against her husband. “I have not yet heard from police and am not aware that an FIR has been filed on the basis of my complaint,” she was quoted as saying.
Mitra had originally complained of domestic violence and demanded separation from her marriage with Bharti, who had termed the allegations ‘baseless’ adding that his wife had asked him to choose between her and his mother.
