Fencing champion Hoshiyar Singh died on Thursday after he was allegedly pushed off a train by Railway Police personnel in Uttar Pradesh. The national-level athlete was travelling in the train along with his family towards his hometown Kasganj.
Singh, who was seated in the general coach, had come to the women’s coach to see his wife and his ailing mother. Government Railway Police then asked Singh to pay Rs. 200 in order to allow him stay in the women’s compartment, which he refused to pay. Singh said he was willing to get off the section at the next stop.
Singh’s family claims that he was then thrown off the train by the railway police personnel before being shoved.
However, contrary to the family’s statement, police claimed Singh had slipped off and got stuck while boarding the train. They said he had gone to drink water at one of the stations.
Meanwhile, Singh’s body has been sent for post-mortem. The athlete is a bronze medal winner at the under-17 national championship held in Kerala in 2005.
