Unable to check the never-ending cycle of farmers’ suicide in the state, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has now sought bollywood’s help.
Fadnavis on Saturday said that he wanted Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone to work with the farmers to work on reducing their stress level.
The state is going through a massive agrarian crisis with more than five farmers committing suicide because of their inability to pay their debt.
Maharashtra recorded half of the country’s total number of farmers’ syicide in 2014, according to the data released by the National Crime Records Bureau.
“We would like to give Deepika Padukone a mission…. mission to engage with farmers,” Fadnavis said at an event in Mumbai, where Deepika launched her foundation `Live Love Laugh’, dedicated to the issue of mental health.
Fadnavis said, “When you talk to anybody, the common word we hear is stress. Everybody experiences stress and people have their own ways of dealing with it. There are people who don’t know how to deal with it…there are people who don’t want to talk about it, share it.”
He said that the senior citizens sometimes dialled 100 (police control room number) because they didn’t have anyone to talk to.
“We did a survey (with regard to farmer suicides) in two places and found out that 40 percent of farmers were under stress. More than the package, they need somebody to assure …reassure them that they exist…they are needed,” he added.
With 2,568 farmers’ suicides during 2014, Maharashtra recorded the highest number in the country.
One of the worst hit regions in the state is Marathwada, which has been hit by three years of continuous droughts. This has resulted in an alarming rise of farmer suicides . In 2014, the region witnessed the death of 574 farmer suicides, while more than 628 farmers have already killed themselves this year.
Not so long ago the the region was in news after a mother committed suicide because she couldn’t feed her five children.
