Police in Uttar Pradesh say that a woman was gang-raped by a person, who she met on Facebook. According to the 23-year-old woman, the accused, identified as Sonu, raped her along with his brothers at a hotel in Shamli district.
The accused, the woman alleged in her complaint, also filmed the act and used the video to blackmail her into marrying him.
The incident took place after she went to meet Sonu at a hotel in Shamli in Muzaffarnagar. Based on the woman’s complaint, according to news agency PTI, Sonu and 10 of his family members have been charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code on the orders of a police officer in Uttar Pradesh’s Shamli.
Last year in September, police in Ghaziabad had arrested a teenager for raping a girl, who he had befriended on Facebook. In October last year, police in Uttar Pradesh had arrested an American national in Mathura for allegedly raping and attempting to kill a Delhi-based woman. The accused was identified as 52-year-old, Michael James Bojer. The victim had ebcome pregnant with the accused’s child.
The law and order has become a cause for concern under the Yogi Adityanath government with crimes against women assuming alarming proportions.
