A senior BJP leader and former MLA, Jayanti Bhanushali, was killed in a moving train as his assassins shot him in head and chest. Bhanushali, who represented the Abdasa Assembly constituency in Kutch from 2007 to 2012, was travelling the Bhuj-Dadar Express train when, around 2 am on Tuesday, unidentified people killed him. The 53-year-old BJP leader was returning to Ahmedabad from Bhuj town of Kutch district in Gujarat.
The coach was separate from the rest of the train after it reached Ahmedabad station. According to Morbi district’s Superintendent of Police Karanraj Vaghela, Bhanushali was shot dead between Gandhidham and Surajbari stations in the neighbouring Kutch district.
Bhavna Patel, Superintendent of Police of Western Railways, was quoted by Indian Express, “Bhanushali was found dead with gunshot injuries to his head and chest. Two empty cases of bullets were also found in the coach. Police were alerted that a passenger in the First-Class AC coach was bleeding. Policemen on board as well as the Police Sub-Inspector of Gandhidham were directed to check the matter, and the train was halted at Maliya station.”
Bhanushali, according to news agency PTI, had stepped down from the post of Gujarat BJP’s vice president in July last year after a woman accused him of rape. However, the Gujarat High Court had quashed the case in August 2018 after the woman withdrew the complaint.
“The railway police on board the Bhuj-Dadar Express informed the Morbi police that Bhanushali was shot dead in the train. When the train reached Maliya station of Morbi, we recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem,” Vaghela was quoted by PTI.
The police team investigating the murder have found empty bullet cases from the compartment. They’ve sent the recovered items for forensic examination.
