Eight school children killed in Karnataka after bus rams into school van


A collision between a private bus and mini school van in Karnataka has left eight school children dead and 12 persons injured.

The incident took place on Tuesday on NH 66 in the coastal Karnataka district of Udupi at the Mohadi Cross, near Gangolli.

Among those dead are six girls.

According to a report in Indian Express, the Udupi district police said that the private bus plying on the Byndoor-Kundapur route crashed into the Maruti Omni school van a few metres away from the Don Bosco School.

The children, identified as Nikita, Ananya, Calista, Ansita, Alwita, Royston, Delvin and Clarissa, studied at the Don Bosco school at Gangolli.

Three students were killed at the spot and five more died in hospital, police said.

The Gangolli police has arrested the bus driver Manju and the conductor Shakeel.

“The driver of the van and his wife are out of danger. Five students are in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in the Manipal hospital,” the Kundapur Circle Inspector P M Divakar said.
