The Election Commission on Thursday merely censured the BJP MP, Sakshi Maharaj for population remark that violated the election code of conduct. The EC said that the future violations will be sternly dealt with.
The EC, which is often accused of lacking will power to take action against the offenders, had issued show cause notice to the controversial BJP MP for his remarks that those who talk of four wives and 40 children are responsible for population problem, saying prima facie he has violated the model code of conduct.
He also said that the money earned from cattle slaughter was being used to fund terrorism.
The BJP MPs remarks come days after the Supreme Court ruled that political parties and candidates cant seek votes in the name of religion or caste and ahead of the first phase of polling in Uttar Pradesh on 11 February.
RJD supremo Lalu Prasad had said that the BJP leader should be booked under Goondas Act and sent to jail. Speaking to reporters in Patna, he said Sakshi Maharaj is “always involved in communalising society” and he should be arrested.
