Domestic violence complaint against AAP’s Somnath Bharti filed by his wife in DCW

According to reports, the wife of senior AAP leader Somnath Bharti on Wednesday approached the Delhi Commission for Women, accusing the Malviya Nagar legislator of domestic abuse.

“I can’t explain in a couple of words what I have been going through. It has been going on since 2010. I want to be out of this marriage,” Bharti’s wife Lipika Mitra said.

“I want separation, and to live with my children with dignity”, Mitra added.

The DCW has issued a notice to Bharti, a former Law Minister in the first AAP government in the national capital. He has been asked to appear before the panel on June 26.

Speaking to the media, DCW chief Barkha Shukla Singh said, “His (Somnath Bharti) wife is distressed, said she was beaten, verbally abused & given death threats”.

Reacting to the controversy, former AAP member and now a BJP leader, Shazia Ilmi, called it “shocking and unfortunate”.

The complaint against Bharti came a day after Delhi Law Minister Jitendra Singh Tomar resigned following his arrest in a fake degrees case.

During the 49-day AAP government in Delhi, Bharti was embroiled in a controversy for his midnight crackdown on African nationals in his constituency.
