Disqualification of 20 AAP MLAs: Mamata Banerjee, CPI-M come in support of Arvind Kejriwal

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday threw her behind her friend and Delhi counterpart, Arvind Kejriwal, on the Election Commission’s decision to disqualify 20 AAP MLAs.

Taking to Twitter, Banerjee wrote, “A Constitutional body cannot be used for political vendetta. The 20 AAP MLAs were not even given a hearing by the Hon EC. Most unfortunate. This goes against the principles of natural justice. At this hour we are strongly with @arvindkejriwal and his team.”

Banerjee’s rival, the Communist Party of India-Marxist, too extended its support to Kejriwal. Senior CPI-M leader Brinda Karat said, “EC decision to disqualify 20 AAP MLAs is undemocratic & selective in procedure & substance. It does not enhance the credibility of the election commission as an autonomous, independent, impartial body. We strongly oppose the decision of the EC.”

Karat’s comments were tweeted by her party’s official Twitter handle.

The Election Commission of India had on Friday reportedly recommended the disqualification of 20 Aam Aadmi Party MLAs in for holding office of profits. AAP had approached the Delhi High Court against the decision. The hearing will resume on Monday.
