Did Subramanian Swamy go too far with ‘blessings of the foreign Christian fanatics’ allegation after Supreme Court grants bail to P Chidambaram?

The Supreme Court on Wednesday granted bail to P Chidambaram in the INX Media case after the former finance minister spent 106 days in custody including in Delhi’s Tihar jail. While the Congress leaders reacted with a sense of relief, BJP’s Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian posted an extraordinary tweet alleging that Chidambaram had got bail ‘due to the blessings of the foreign Christian fanatics.’ He, however, did not make it clear who he was referring to as the ‘foreign Christian fanatics.’

His tweet read, “If Pucca Chor gets bail due to the blessings of the foreign Christian fanatics, one more case should be filed to send him back. I have that one more ready but I want PM to re- transfer Rajeshwar of ED to Delhi from Lucknow where Jaitely sent him and denying him his promotion.”

The Supreme Court bench that granted bail to Chidambaram comprised Justices R Banumathi, AS Bopanna and Hrishikesh Roya. The bench also criticised the Delhi High Court for its observation on the merits of the allegations against Chidambaram while rejecting his bail petition. The Bench observed that the former union minister had satisfied the triple tests for granting bail. “we disapprove the manner in which the conclusions are recorded in paragraphs 57 to 62 (of Delhi HC judgment) wherein the observations are reflected to be in the nature of finding relating to the alleged offence”, Livelaw website quoted the top court as saying.

Some of Swamy’s fans wondered about the rationale behind his critcism since Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not listen to him. One wrote, “Does the PM ever listen to you?” Another commented, “Swamiji understands the complex network of crooks. He can destroy it in one go. No wonder he is being denied the position of FM.”

Meanwhile, Chidambaram is expected to hold a news conference at the Congress headquarters in Delhi on Thursday. A notification by the Congress read, “Congress Party briefing by Shri P Chidambaram, MP, Senior Spokesperson, AICC, tomorrow December 5, 2019 at 12:30 PM at AICC Headquarters.”
