West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday joined the raging debate on the fallout of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s demonetisation announcement that saw declaration of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes illegal in November last year. Banerjee dubbed the note ban as the “biggest disaster” and the new GST regime a “great stunt”.
“As I had said earlier, demonetisation is the biggest disaster. It has completely ruined the country’s economy. Also, the GST is a great stunt. Why Govt started it hurriedly without making proper plans? The commoners & all traders are the worst sufferers.” she tweeted.

Banerjee had earlier called the GST roll-out as another “epic blunder” of the Centre after the demonetisation.
On the hurried introduction of GST, the West Bengal chief minister demanded an investigation into the new tax regime.
“Thorough investigation is needed,” she said in another tweet.

Her criticism came as Modi said he had asked his government to review the complaints on GST and make necessary changes if necessary. Meanwhile, GST Council is meeting in Delhi on Friday to review compliance rules for businesses and consider what have been described as “structural changes” in the new tax regime.
