In a major shake-up in the All India Congress Committee, the Congress on Tuesday announced new roles for several party stalwarts including Rajya Sabha MP, Ahmed Patel.
A party statement said that Patel had been made the new treasurer of the AICC, while former union minister, Anand Sharma was appointed as the chairperson of the ‘Foreign Affairs Department’ in the party.
Ahmed, who’s also functioned as Sonia Gandhi’s political secretary, being given a key role in the new team of Rahul Gandhi, is important in light of rumours that he had fallen out of favour with the new Congress president.
In another significant development, the party also appointed Luizinho Faleiro as the new AICC Gneral Secretary in charge of north-eastern states excluding Assam. Faleiro being given a new responsibility at the national level assumes significance given his alleged role in spoiling the Congress’s chances of forming the government in Goa last year,
Goa Forward Party had said that Faleiro was responsible for its decision to tie-up with the BJP to form the government. With Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar grappling with poor health, the Congress may want to approach GFP’s Vijai Sardesai, who is an ex-Congress leader himself, for an alliance in the state.
Faleiro, then the Goa Congress chief, had resigned in the aftermath of the assembly election results.
In the last assembly polls, the Congress had won 17 seats, while Sardesai’s GFP had won 3 seats. The Congress needed the support of 21 MLAs to form the government, but the BJP had outsmarted the party by first approaching the governor to stake its claim to form the government with the help of Sardesai’s party.
In other announcements, the party also appointed Motilal Vora as the new general secretary (administration).
