Government means elected government in Delhi: Delhi’s law ministry circular

In a major announcement by the Delhi government on Tuesday, a circular said that the definition of government in the capital was the ‘elected government’ in Delhi.

In a circular issued to all departments and ministries, the circular said that in light of this new order “all files related to government except land, public order and police need not be sent to LG.”

Delhi’s elected government led by Aam Aadmi Party has been in confrontation with the LG Najeeb Jung over administrative powers.

Not too long ago, Jung, while writing to Delhi government, had stated that the ‘constitutional definition of government in Delhi is LG.”

The two sides are also in a direct showdown with regards to jurisdiction over the Anti Corruption Branch. Arvind Kejriwal led-government of Delhi also recently moved High Court over the appointment of MK Meena as the ACB’s chief.

The LG had kicked off another controversy by refusing to approve the appointment of Swati Maliwal as the new chief of DCW. But, he gave his nod after the AAP government re-submitted the file related to Maliwal.

Aap had registered a landslide victory in Delhi earlier this year by winning 67 out of 70 seats.  Kejriwal and his colleagues have have accused BJP of running politics of vendetta by using the LG’s office, which reports to the central government led by PM Narendra Modi, to avenge Delhi’s loss.
